Along the banks of the Okatie River, between Beaufort and Hilton Head Island, Oldfield Golf Course, built in 2002, was the first Greg Norman design in South Carolina’s Lowcountry. Noted for designing courses in concert with their natural environment, Greg Norman created one of his finest golf courses at Oldfield, a 7,142 yard, par 72 course. Oldfield can be demanding, but with five sets of tees, the course is as playable as it is beautiful.
Limited public play is allowed at Oldfield Golf Club. A secluded natural setting meshes with the Okatie River to create an inspiring experience for public players looking to enjoy the spoils of the club life within the community’s white equestrian fencing.
Although Norman designed the Oldfield Golf Course, most of the design work was already provided with the beautiful landscape. Its layout is routed through moss-covered oaks, towering pines, and broad savannahs of bloomgrass and palmetto, leading to the banks of the Okatie River. Oldfield’s design can hold its own with some of the Lowcountry’s other top courses.
Norman added his unique waste bunkers along the narrow fairways for added challenge. The trickiest bunkersare the tall sod-wall ones bordering the greens. The large greens have narrow openings, allowing for many different pin placements. The back nine createsunforgettable risk-reward holes with the river and wetlands. The 12th hole over water might be the best short par 4 in South Carolina.
From the onset, the creators of Oldfield have sought to build upon the elements which contribute to the ambience of the great plantations. They toured magnificent country homes and gardens throughout the Lowcountry, identifying and incorporating special elements and a graceful style of living which help to give Oldfield a special feeling.
The 20,000 square foot Lowcountry style Golf Club includes ladies’ and men’s lounges, a formal dining room, private dining, a mixed grill, and covered porches surveying the course and practice facility.
